 Lynch-Getty Global Student Award 2012

In June of this year four Grade 12 students from the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will be recognized for demonstrating leadership in the community through their involvement in groups, events and activities that foster cross-cultural learning and understanding. These four students will be recipients of the Lynch-Getty Global Student Award, at $1,000 CAD each and that is to be used upon graduation towards secondary or post-secondary education or a volunteer experience outside Canada. The award is named to honour the legacy of Alex Getty and Ron Lynch, former members of the OCENET (Ottawa-Carleton Education Network) Board of Directors, who believed that learning to communicate and act globally was important to creating a world where people strive to understand and help those near and far.

Haikou Education Bureau is eager to build more bridges between Chinese and Canadian students for the purposes of international education, language development and intercultural learning. During the last two weeks of October, OCENET welcomed 26 visiting high school teachers from Nigeria. The Nigerian teachers attended workshops on topics focusing upon Assessment and Evaluation, Technology in the Classroom, and Differentiated Instruction, among various other pedagogical techniques used in OCDSB schools. A highlight of their time here was the opportunity to visit local high schools to observe OCDSB teachers and students in their classrooms.  OUR 2011 SUMMER PROGRAM 10th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

In the summer of 2011, we welcomed over 150 students from around the world.

On Monday, Jully 11th, we held an awesome Anniversary Party filled with activities to celebrate our ten years of diversity.

Our day began with Sue Boudreau, our Lead Teacher, who presented us with a brief history of the SEE program and how it all began in 2001.

A spectacular Magic Show by Luc Leduc, the Duke of Magic® followed especially for our students to get them excited for the rest of the day to come.

Roxanne Goodman, who led our students in their music and confidence-building workshop, stressed the importance of having confidence in front of others when speaking a second language and teaching others about your background.

Ben Timmins, one of our English teachers, led the students in the Nōtan workshop. Nōtan is a craft of Japanese conception that uses the placement of light and dark shapes to create images.

Sergio Guerra, a local Slam Poet of Ottawa, performed some of his poetry for our students and encouraged them to write as well. Slam Poetry is a form of spoken word that very often focuses on issues that surface around social, ethnic and cultural diversity.
